Lately I have become more interested in becoming an excellent programmer. Before I was never really interested in becoming technically really good as a programmer, however in the last month this changed dramatically. So far I can't really tell why. Now I believe that it is crucial for my future to become an exceptionally good programmer, if I want to achieve great things in the programming world, then I also need to be a great programmer. This seems obvious and I think it is obvious, however before I have never really been interested in that. I saw programming more like a means to an end (which is money), but now I see it as much more. Even though I understood that the wielder of great software has immense power in this world, my actions did not align with that. I wasn't actively learning new programming concept, I wasn't going deep, the only things I did was do the things that are close to money or might earn me money. Lately not just my stance on programming has changed, but also my actions. First of all I have a passion for coding that I have not felt before, I am more interested in coding and also have more fun doing it (I have the suspicion that it has to do with me having crossed a certain proficiency/competency threshold). But besides that I have for the first time embarked on a learning journey to learn more about programming, namely I learned Golang with the purpose of learning the HTTP protocol. I am not done yet, but this was already an eye opening experience. For the first time I could draw connections between different programming languages on my own, I could see things I liked more in one over the other. And all of this with just two weeks of learning Go. Additionally I learned about the difference between TCP and UDP, about URL and URI and more.

Next steps

Since I am fininshed with my two week Go project, I can now decide what to do next and for how long I am going to do. I have a few options:

Continue the Golang HTTP course
Do a Go project specifically designed for utilizing goroutines
Create a programming language using ARM assembly

My goal with all three of these projects is to learn more about coding, go deeper and becoming one of the best programmers known to man. There is no money in any of these projects directly.

HTTP course

With the HTTP course I could continue my Golang learning journey and also develop an excellent understanding of the HTTP protocol. Having an initmate understanding of HTTP works is in my opinion a crucial skill, when doing anything network and web related. This is something I will have to learn sooner or later, it is mandatory. Finishing this course would have the benefit of giving me this knowledge and also not doing a context switch since I would continue using Go. If I would do the programming language I might forget a lot about Go, because I have only been studying Go for two weeks.

Goroutine project

This is an interesting project to learn about how multithreading and concurrent code works. Additionally it would teach me how to use goroutines properly. Becaue this requires writing lower level code, it would also simply improve my baseline coding skills, especially because I have only been writing code in Typescript before.

Programming language

I know that this is just a killer project. This would not just improvce my skills by a small margin, this would make me order of magnitute better. I would gain tremendous amounts of knowledge and skill. However the scope of this project is definitely bigger than the one of the other two.

Conclusion

To conclude I have to say that creating my own programming language using ARM assembly will definitely improve my skills the most. However I think it is not the right time to do it just yet. At this time my context about the HTTP course and Golang is still fresh and this course deals with a mandatory to learn protocol as well. Meaning if I am going to have to learn HTTP anyway, then now is the best time to do it. Besides that finishing this course will not take that long, probably just a couple of days, and all the other projects will definitely take longer. So in essence learning HTTP is low hanging fruit as well.

Going deeper

Acquiring more knowledge and skills is the way to go for. Becoming an unparalleled developer will benefit me in life more than anything. I think it is also worth pursuing this right know instead of chasing the money head on. I believe that this way more money and more power is going to end in my hands anyway. And I am only saying this because this is the conflict I am having, more knowledge and skill or money. But I want both. I can't tell why yet, but my intuition is saying that I need to improve my skills
